We have added an introduction area to give members a place to introduce themselves to the site and to other members. Please take a moment to say hello by posting a small message about yourself, and how Buddhist teachings influence the way you live your life.

Thanks,

.

`Hello everyone,
My name is Don. I reside in Phoenix, AZ. USA.

My initial contact with Buddhism occurred during my stay in Thailand back in the late sixties. For a year and nine months I took in the ambience of Buddhist ornamentation and noticed its calming effect on the general population. As religion is the matrix of all cultures, the predominance of Buddhism in Thailand was evident in the outlook on life of the Thai citizenry.

Yet, at the same time, the Christian minority functioned freely with no noticeable opposition and, indeed, was able to coexist with their fellow Buddhist friends in complete harmony. The Buddhist majority there neither espoused nor flatly denied the God of their own Thai Christian friends. My Thailand sojourn was a time for me to explore the intricacies of a language radically different from the typical Europe tongue.

Just as a nation’s culture is founded upon a religious framework of some kind, so also does a language reflect the cultural background of its speakers. Not surprisingly, Thai has a certain Buddhist orientation to it, having anciently (and extensively) borrowed from the lexicon of Pali (the primary language of Buddhism) and also from Sanskrit.

While not Buddhist myself, I am eager to make as many Buddhist friends as possible, especially now that the practitioners of the world’s religions – with one exception – are being threatened by the determined savagery of that one exception. We had better pull together, lest we all be pulled apart.
