I am a philosopher and musician who works as a philosophy professor. I publish books and articles, and I write, play, and record music.

I work on Buddhist philosophy, contemporary continental philosophy, and social and cultural theory.

My main instrument is the bass guitar, though I play some other instruments as well (six-string guitar, percussion, and some Chinese and Japanese instruments). I don't sing very well by myself, but I love to sing with others.

My avocations are bicycling and chess.

I live in Chicago seven months a year, and in the middle of Kansas for about five months a year. In recent years I have also spent one month a year in Shanghai and Mexico City. Next school year I will teach for the entire year in Xiamen, China.

I have traveled to many places in the world and enjoy talking about different cultures. In particular, I have studied and enjoy discussing Japanese culture.

I am healthy, though I am also still recovering from a very bad bicycle accident from three years ago (I was hit by a van). I am a bit burly, but my strength is coming back, and I can ride fairly well (though I walk with a cane). I hope to get back into age-group amateur bike racing (though probably gravel rather than road) in the next two years.

I do not drink or smoke or use drugs.

I love Western classical music, jazz, and rock, a good deal of avant-garde music (which is a lot of what I play) and the classical music of India and East Asia, and much African music as well.

I love to read, and consider a "study date" in a cafe a pleasant time.

I am in an open relationship; in Chicago I live alone. I am completely honest with and loyal to my partner, but there is room (and time and energy) in my life for an affectionate friendship, and I am very loyal to all of my friends.
